Ivana Beljan + Elizaveta Radi > Museum ‘An Aside’

| Ivana Beljan + Elizaveta Radi
| 2015 | Studio Caruso | ETH Zürich
| Profesor: Adam Caruso

Upon entering the building the visitor is given the impression of an enfilade.
However, as he advances down the suite of rooms he is taken by surprise by the central space which intersects the enfilade. These junctions form niches enhancing the spatial experience and allowing the visitor to choose his own path through the museum.

The exhibited collection includes art works by Lothar Baumgarten, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, Thomas Scheibitz, Thomas Schütte and Fischli/Weiss. Art works related by a common theme are shown in the enclosed exhibition rooms while those in the central space act as mediators to connect the different themes.

The exhibition is full of associations, connections and echoes between the art works which appear to be there almost by chance. Some are placed in a corner, on windowsills or on the floor and allow a simple and direct approach. This spirit is conveyed through the architecture as well: simple plywood panels cover the timber frame construction in the exhibiting areas while the bare structure is displayed on the ceilings and the upper part of the central space.

Daylight reaches the interior from the side and acts as a natural guide through the museum. Moreover, the windows establish a connection between the art and the surrounding unkempt garden with its tall trees – a bizarre natural oasis in the urban context of Zurich West.
The appearance of the copper façade changes over time due to natural weathering – it responds to the surrounding nature just like the art works inside.
